Hartprints was the name of the first book I published: it was a collection of short stories. I’ll never forget opening it for the first time, seeing it bound with my name on it. It wasn’t professionally done, but it was mine. The cover was a piece of artwork I collaborated with my mother on, fashioned after the most beautiful cover I’d ever seen at the time, one that had a photo overlay.

River’s Rowan – Paperback

Small towns have big secrets. In New Hannah Cove, the lives of five teenage girls will be forever altered by one reckless decision. River should be Popularity’s poster child: he’s on the football team, and he lives in a mansion. The students of Covenant High, though, keep score of his anger issues, and treat him like an outsider. Except Brielle, who falls in love quickly with him. But when young love fades, a betrayal leads to tragedy and New Hannah Cove becomes a monster’s playground. An obsessed father bent on revenge targets the girls who bullied his son. He stalks them, learns their greatest fears, constructs a soundproofed shack, and kidnaps them one by one. He calls the shack “The Radical Redress,” a place where wrongs can be made right. He customizes their torture to their specific fears. There’s Brielle, who fears being lost. Sierra, the star pole vaulter and the only Black person in her family, fears dying at the hands of a racist police officer. Willow, the school journalist, questions whether River was truly bullied, and believes beauty brings acceptance. Eden, who is top in the class, dreams of becoming a scientist, but fears the dark. Her dad is a felon, and her family is made up of Pretenders. There’s also Sage. Unconnected to the tragedy at Covenant High, she already knows abuse: her fear is water. When the girls realize they’re not alone, they hatch a daring escape plan. Some are disfigured, some are homeless, and some are angry. In a town where no one suspects your kidnapper, they have to fight for their own survival. Not all of them come home. From the author of “Dance for Me,” “River’s Rowan” examines themes of abuse, racism and what determines who is a bully and who is a victim.

Taramul Viselor

Behind the Iron Curtain live four very special children. Each of them born to women oppressed by the Communist regime, and each of them has special needs. There are the twins, Alina and Auner. Alina is sightless, but spirited. She fiercely longs to be independent and free, no matter the cost. Auner’s mission is to protect Alina; he’s loyal and a charming thief who happens to be without an arm and struggles with shrieking and flailing due to a bout with polio as a baby. Ekko is sullen and strategic. Ghosts chase him because his father tried to kill him: he makes a solemn promise to himself that, despite a deformed hand and a speech impediment, he will exact revenge. And then there’s Alizabet, the quietest of the group, yet the most creative. During their time in Romania’s worst, most abusive home “for the unsalvageables”, she regales them with stories of a magical place: a place where the animals talk, birds have healing powers, where you can ride on the back of majestic, mythical creatures and where, most of all, you’re safe. As they embark on a perilous, uncertain journey to escape the orphanage and find Taramul Viselor, they’ll find epic quests, a heartbreaking betrayal and the importance of believing in tomorrow.

The Storyteller

In my nightmare, I lay screaming on the floor, four years old, watching my father kill my mother. I won’t make another sound for fourteen years. Not when he chains me to the tree, not when I am kept inside a wooden box under the bed, not even when he tries to rid me of the evil spirits with rape. I have no voice. All I have are scars from the branding and a heart that shakes with fear. When Tully, the white and black mutt that’s been my only friend, is hurt protecting me, I can’t stand the thought of living with him under the tree by Mama, so I carry him to the big farmhouse from where I’ve stolen food. A doctor lives there. Cole’s house is a place where they make food pretty, windows are made of colored glass and horses are rescued. It’s a place where it’s safe to sleep. Here stories called fairy tales melt my heart, Tully chases chickens and I learn to read. But Cole’s past is marred by tragedy, too. When Cole learns who I really am, and can’t bear to see me, I must return to the gulley where Black Owl, the spirit only Daddy sees, demands my death. This is my story, and there is no one to save me except me. How do I find my voice in this place of ancient sorrow before it is too late?

Currently surviving sexual abuse, she reads a library book about how dandelion oil can help all sorts of things (from dry skin to cancer). She gathers them and creates homemade oil, hoping to stop the ants crawling inside her, hoping to make whole the broken parts. Poppy is innocent, free from abuse, imaginative and even quietly defiant, decorating her space with My Little Pony creations and healing birds. When Haven realizes Poppy is in danger of also becoming “Daddy’s girl” she knows she has to take action and do something bold and daring. But her act of bravery is flawed: it will only save one of them.“… a striking example of art as redemption..” – G – a Storytimer review

The landscape here is grey. There is no color: flowers don’t grow here; not even grass grows here. I’m not sure how old I am, only that I am still young. My family is gone, but I remember them. I’ve seen and done things here, things that haunt me. The only way out is to become the ash that floats in the air; the only way out is through the chimneys. But I have made a friend. He is like a Shabbat candle; he gives me hope. He has a secret, a secret plan to make me smile in the midst of death, a way to see color again and to hear the whistling elephant. He is my way out.
